Porcelain Crowns (Caps)

We subject our teeth to a lot of abuse and they operate under extreme pressures.  It’s no surprise, then, that they sometimes crack, chips, break, or experience other types of damage.  Whether you suffer from significant tooth decay, bruxism, or trauma to a tooth, Signature Smiles can provide you with treatment options, including crowns, that will salvage your natural tooth, restoring function and maintaining appearance.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, or cap, is a restorative treatment used to cover an area of significant tooth damage.  When a dental filling isn’t sufficient to treat damage, but much of the tooth is still healthy and viable, a dental crown can save your natural tooth, helping you to avoid extraction and replacement.

There are many different materials used for crowns, but porcelain is among the most popular and attractive options.  Porcelain crowns are not only strong and durable, but they are designed to match the color of existing teeth to blend seamlessly with your smile, hiding your dental work so that no one is the wiser.

Porcelain crowns are custom made to meet your needs, encasing your tooth and protecting it against further harm, as well as ensuring that you’re able to maintain your natural bite pattern.  Attractive and resilient porcelain crowns are designed to last up to 10 years or more with proper care.

When are Crowns Necessary?

Crowns are an excellent dental treatment to address a number of issues.  While many instances of tooth decay can be treated with fillings, there are cases in which the extent of damage requires more comprehensive treatment.  Crowns provide added coverage to protect the remaining natural tooth and restore full function.  They can also replace broken or inadequate fillings if further damage has occurred since fillings were placed.

Crowns are often required following root canal treatments because of the extent of tooth material removed.  They are frequently the best solution when salvaging broken or fractured teeth, as well.  Finally, they may be used for cosmetic purposes, to enhance your natural tooth.

Significant tooth decay, issues like clenching and grinding (bruxism), and accidents (sporting, auto, etc.) that cause trauma to a tooth can all lead to damage that requires some level of restoration.  With a custom crown from Signature Smiles, you can salvage your natural tooth and enjoy continued function and a complete smile.

What to Expect

Creating your custom crown is a multi-step process that begins with taking impressions so an exact match to your natural tooth can be made.  In other words, we’ll try to replicate your tooth as closely as possible so you can enjoy the same appearance and bite pattern.

This mold will be used to create a permanent crown that replaces the damaged portion of your tooth, as well as a temporary crown that you can leave your appointment with, protecting your tooth from further harm until the permanent crown is ready.  From there, we’ll address the damage to your tooth.

Following numbing to ensure patient comfort, we’ll remove decay and smooth and shape any damaged areas of the tooth before placing the temporary crown.  At a second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned and prepared, and the permanent crown will be placed and adjusted as need for a perfect and lasting fit.
